Problem Solving for Civil Engineers
Past Work
Here is a selection of various projects which have been undertaken in the last few years. Keith Withey specialises in those unusual projects which require a certain amount of lateral thinking to get the most effective solution, whether by the use of novel materials, or by using existing techniques in a novel manner or location.
Corrosion of steel reinforcement can only occur if part of the steel forms an anode in an electrical circuit. Cathodic protection works by forcing a circuit with an external corrosion-resistant material as an anode, so that the reinforcement remains cathodic and hence free of corrosion.
Development of designs for sea defence works where both structural and aesthetic considerations have to be taken into account.
Application of carbon fibre plates to a repaired bridge deck, instrumented to ensure structural action was as predicted
Application trials for use of composites to strengthen bridge columns. Experience of carbon fibre, kevlar and glass fibre applications.
